The 'Dream Stable' designed on a Napkin

Written by Jo Ellen Cushing

Unique to the facilities at the International School for Earth Studies is the construction of a one-of-a-kind post-and-beam (timber frame) stable. This two-story building is 36'X48' with 12' wings on each side. It is built entirely of 8" X 8" locally milled white pine timbers. The lower level houses four horse stalls and a large tack and maintenance room. The upper level is a living quarter and training center, also known as our Krav Maga dojo.

How it all started…

In the summer of 2016, I approached a friend about building my dream stable. Vernon was a local timber frame builder by trade that was particularly skilled in the old style mortise and tenon joint, an ancient joint style (dating back at least 7 000 years) that is secured with a wooden dowel. Intrigued, he asked me to 'jot down my plan' on a napkin at his dining room table. Looking at it, I wondered if we needed blueprints. His reply was no, that we could do it, and that the rest is history. Little did I know then that this 'project' would span seven years and that I would become the main contractor and carpenter.

A family endeavor

The construction of our ' Dream Stable ' was a family endeavor from the start. The white pine logs were processed at our local sawmill, where our daughter Janna Lee worked, and where she fastidiously handled every beam.

Transporting the raw timber beams to Vernon’s farm, the joints were meticulously cut, then marked, disassembled and once again trailer loaded back to the site for construction. Much like a ‘lego’ project. A unique 'boom' was created so that our little Kubota could lift the massive timbers into place. Our 'Dream Stable' jigsaw puzzle was constructed in stages and was protected with 3 massive hay tarps during the winter months to preserve the beams.

For Vernon and Johnny

This building is a dedication in part to the memory of Vernon and Johnny, who both tragically passed away in 2020, never seeing its completion. They were always asking me: “How are you going to do this? How are you going to do that?” My reply was always: “I'll figure it out when I get there.”

Cushing Stables and Krav Maga Dojo

Cushing Stables is presently home to 5 Canadian horses (the National Horse of Canada), 3 purebred Friesians, 3 Friesian crosses, and one rescued Newfoundland pony.

We are excited to share this unique building with our students. It's a space where one can learn self-defense, as well as connect with our equine family.

We believe that the ability to empower and gain confidence in oneself is one of the greatest gifts one can give, and our 'Dream Stable' is designed to facilitate this learning  process. Come join us and be a part of this unique educational experience!
